Situated on the edge of the
Cotswolds, and only 12 miles away from Oxford's dreaming
spires, Witney is famous for
the woollen blankets which have been made here for almost 1000 years. Witney has mushroomed in size in recent
years with a growing population of 20,000, and many new industries and
businesses provide a healthy local economy.
Against this background the old market town remains true to its core.
The mainly 13th century parish church of St. Mary's with its handsome
spire dominates Church Green. The gabled and pillared Buttercross was the heart of the
market in years gone by. The town hall and Corn Exchange together with inns and
hotels around the market square have seen centuries of commercial activity in
this old Cotswold town.
