Fitting Leathers for Desks,
Tables and Writing Slopes. Using a straight edge and a sharp craft knife, trim two adjoining sides of the leather to create a prepared corner. As leather is easily stretched out of shape, apply glue to the surface where it is to lie. Strong wallpaper adhesive, or a thinned P.V.A. are equally good for the job. Spread the adhesive evenly with a comb-edge spreader. The whole surface being glued, carefully position the pre-cut corner and spread the rest of the leather little by little, using your fingers or a soft cloth to press out the air bubbles as you go. Take care not to stretch the leather, and check for correct alignment with all edges. The waste or selvage will overlap the remaining two sides. Press the leather into the edge of the cut-out with a blunt tool, (e.g. a spoon handle) thus making a line for trimming which you can do with a sharp craft knife. Starting in the corner as the knife cuts along the line, pull away the waste strip of leather, and your skiver will exactly fill the rebate.
